Air Chief Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh (10 January 1957 – 18 December 2018) was a distinguished Nigerian military officer, aviator, and statesman whose career spanned over three decades of service to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Renowned for his strategic acumen, professional discipline, and commitment to institutional reform, he rose to occupy the highest echelons of Nigeria’s armed forces, leaving an enduring imprint on the nation’s defence architecture.
Born in Vimtim, Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Badeh’s formative years were shaped by a strong sense of duty, scholarship, and leadership. He enlisted into the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of Regular Course 21 and was commissioned into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in 1979.
Throughout his career, he pursued extensive professional and academic development, attending prestigious military institutions at home and abroad, including advanced flying and command courses. His intellectual rigour and operational competence distinguished him early as a strategic thinker and disciplined officer.
Air Chief Marshal Badeh served in various operational, instructional, and command capacities within the Nigerian Air Force. As a trained fighter pilot and seasoned air strategist, he contributed significantly to operational planning, air combat training, and force development initiatives.
In October 2012, he was appointed Chief of Air Staff, where he championed efforts to enhance operational readiness, modernise air assets, and strengthen personnel welfare. In January 2014, he was elevated to the position of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the highest-ranking military office in Nigeria, overseeing the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force at a critical period in the nation’s security history.
During his tenure as CDS, Badeh emphasised joint operations, inter-agency coordination, and strategic reforms aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s counter-insurgency and national security frameworks. His leadership reflected a commitment to unity of command, operational synergy, and institutional resilience.
